Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing is a highly effective form of psychotherapy used in the treatment of trauma including PTSD, anxiety, phobias, depression, and addiction.
When someone experiences a trauma of some kind the brain normally processes the experience, and all is well. However, sometimes, fragmented memories of the trauma can remain unprocessed meaning that although the trauma is over and the threat has gone, that it still feels very current, and we may experience the same physical responses that we felt at the time of the initial trauma.
Using EMDR we are able to process the trauma so that the brain is no longer in a state of high alert and in addition to this, we are able to shift the brain into a state of rational rather than emotional thinking. By being able to think rationally about an event we are able to let go of unnecessary feelings of guilt, sadness, anger; feelings of being overwhelmed, or other negative associated emotions. This is such a powerful yet simple tool that does not have to rake over the past scenario again and is excellent for those that cannot put the experience into words.
Addiction can take many different forms, it is something that we do that ultimately makes us feel bad and when we are finally sick and tired of being sick and tired, we desire change. Addiction can take many different forms, it is something that we do that ultimately makes us feel bad and when we are finally sick and tired of being sick and tired, we desire change. Addiction essentially hijacks the brain and it is here that we focus. When we carry out an addictive behaviour such as gambling, drug taking or excessive drinking, the reward centre in our brain experiences a surge of dopamine. This lights up the reward centres and creates a conditioned response to certain triggers. This response leads to a craving or a ‘need’ to act out the addictive behaviour, use drugs for example. This then of course leads to us to engage in the continued behaviour.
The reason that we cannot just stop or change easily, despite all our best efforts is because we stop thinking rationally and become overwhelmed by the need to use or keep thinking we are the master of this. Essentially this is why our behaviour seems irrational to others and often to ourselves.
Hypnotherapy works by bypassing the conscious mind and guiding the individual into a heightened state of suggestibility through the use of relaxation and visualization. In the hypnotic state, the mind is much more receptive to the positive suggestions and ideas that enable us to lose our habits.
In times of extreme stress, our minds enter into a state of hyperarousal known as the fight or flight response. As our minds become primed to react to a perceived imminent threat, they flood our bodies with stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol and our central nervous system goes into overdrive getting ready to either fight or run away.
As our breathing rate increases, we experience many physical sensations within the body, such as light-headedness, palpitations, a feeling like we can’t breathe properly, physical tension, a dry mouth, nausea and pins and needles and psychological symptoms such as a sense of dread, a feeling of being detached or overly emotional and a feeling of being out of control. And as our anxiety peaks, we may even experience a panic attack. Now, it’s important to remember that a certain amount of stress hormones are necessary to keep us safe but not the extent of causing us lengthy problems.
During hypnosis the mind is much more receptive to the positive suggestions which enable us to overcome the negative beliefs and self-talk that feeds the anxiety. This then leads to us developing a calmer state of mind and counteracts the negative thought processes that leads the brain into entering a state of heightened anxiety in the first place.

Often the cause of a phobia may not be seemly obvious. In fact it’s not uncommon to develop a fear or phobia of a situation that appears seemingly unrelated to the traumatic situation. An example of this might be someone who develops a fear of flying suddenly due to a traumatic incident occurring around the time of a flight or whom is going through a highly stressful or anxious time in their lives, a relationship breakdown for example. In this situation, although the flight itself was not traumatic, because the traumatic experience took place close to the time of the flight, the brain may then perceive flying to be a dangerous activity. And of course this negative belief is only reinforced further when flying is avoided. So how do we stop this?
Hypnotherapy is used to re-frame our thoughts and to go back through our experiences in our lives to find out how it happened and reset how we feel. We are able to retrain our mind by allowing our brains to store different reactions to how we used to react.

Thanks to some well known celebrities, the menopause is very much out in the open. Our bodies change, our thoughts, our reactions and although we have an excuse now for forgetting things, the menopause is incredibly destructive, damaging our self esteem. According to recent research, 50% of menopausal women aren’t going for promotions and 20% choose to leave the workforce entirely because they find their symptoms unmanageable. It can also damage relationships. There are so many symptoms and we just don't recognise half of them as being related to peri menopause or the menopause.
Hypnotherapy can help by giving support to tracking the symptoms and looking at what is most prominent, identifying what is most prevalent, what is linked to different parts of living and giving back the control to you instead of being at the whim of your hormones. Hypnotherapy can reduce the many symptoms including hot flushes, brain fog as well as our negative feelings about the menopause and our aging process.
Weight gain is all about the mind and this is because our minds are creatures of habit and they don’t like feeling uncomfortable, which means in times of stress or anxiety that the mind will search for a familiar fix! Something to soothe the anxiety or distract us from the stressful situation and of course it will return to what it knows!

Children are like sponges for information and if they are suffering with anxiety, exam stress, separation anxiety, have picked up tics or habits, behaviour problems, toilet troubles or sleeping difficulties then hypnotherapy can help. Children take to hypnotherapy very easily and for children with ADHD it can be the longest time that they relax. Hypnotherapy for children under 14 is more of a talking style of therapy and it can take just an understandable explanation of what is really going on in our heads and feelings to be enough for changes to happen. Hypnotherapy, tapping and EMDR can alter unhelpful responses and unhelpful beliefs, meaning that you are able to think more clearly and calmly. This improves memory recall and the ability to think rationally allowing every child to reach their full potential.

All of this is at a cost. Since COVID, lifestyles have changed, when we have a stressful job and a busy social life, we can forget to relax, address things that we need to, which can lead to a crisis and feeling overwhelmed. Work and life don't stop and we continue to muddle through as best we can without truly addressing what we need to. Sometimes our lives get too much and we don't feel like we can say no to more.
A course of hypnotherapy allows the time to reconnect, to learn new techniques, for the stresses of work to feel manageable, to be able to cope with renewed strength, to reorder what is important and sleep peacefully. To get back to being you with more confidence.

I have extensive knowledge and experience of working with children and adults with learning difficulties, autism, ADHD and behaviours that challenge. I accept what it is that they want to change and we work together to try to understand more about how our minds work but equally with the power of our minds. I use recordings whenever possible to continue the learning and for the changes to become something that is a new knee jerk reaction instead of an old behaviour.
I use simple language and metaphor to explain how to change and by really listening to the language used and the way issues are explained I can use the same language in order to resonate with getting the message through.
Hypnotherapy really helps to calm the mind and body and it can be used to really speak to the subconscious and bring about the change that is wanted.
I also hold workshops to train care staff and parent carers.
